Esther Yamuza

Fui cuentera desde niña, aunque no lo supiera. Solía acompañar a mi abuela en la cocina y, mientras guisaba y me contaba sus cosas de cuando pequeña, yo la imitaba con mis propias aventuras y desventuras.

Llegué a la universidad para convertirme en maestra de educación especial, aunque sentía que me faltaba algo. Después comencé arte dramático y di mis primeros pasos como performer con unos maravillosos alumnos de la Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design (Londres). A ello le siguió el tiempo que trabajé en Alemania con la compañía de teatro romaní Pralipe. En 2003 inicié mi carrera en el teatro.

En 2004 comencé a especializarme en la narración oral con espectáculos y talleres. Desde entonces he participado en festivales e intercambios alrededor de España y el extranjero, incluyendo Paraguay, Colombia y Yugoslavia. Hace poco tuve la grata experiencia de visitar Finlandia para contar historias y hablar de mi trabajo en la narración oral inclusiva. Actualmente compagino la narración oral y la escritura con la enseñanza a personas con o sin diversidad intelectual.

Lo que más me gusta de mi profesión es comprobar cómo la humilde palabra puede trascender idiomas y discapacidades para transportarnos y transformarnos.

I was a storyteller as a young girl, although I didn’t exactly know it. I would join my grandmother in the kitchen, and while she stirred her stews and told me tales of her childhood, I would reciprocate with my adventures and struggles.

I went to university to become a special education teacher, but I felt something was missing. Afterwards, I started drama and took my first steps with a wonderful troupe from Central St. Martin’s College (London). Following that, I worked in Germany with the Roma theatre company Pralipe. In 2003 I started my career in theatre.

In 2004 I began specializing in storytelling, working in shows and workshops. Since then I’ve participated in festivals and exchanges around Spain and abroad, including Paraguay, Colombia and Yugoslavia. I recently had the pleasant experience of visiting Finland to tell stories and speak about my work in inclusive storytelling. Currently, I combine storytelling and writing with teaching people with or without intellectual diversity.

What I like most about my profession is to see how the humble word can transcend languages and disabilities to transport and transform us.
